Give the Gift of Music - A Roundup of this year’s interviews

Images of books and CDs mentioned in the podcast

Hi! Well, the holidays are right around the corner. One of the things that has helped us get through this crazy year of 2020, which feels like it’s been going on for over twenty years now, is the arts… Music especially.

I can’t think of a better gift for you or your loved ones than music to listen to and to learn.  Here are links to music of the artists that I have interviewed on my podcast.  You can purchase these beauties directly from the artists’ pages so the money goes directly to them.  Also, if you play piano the harp arrangements translate nicely to the piano.

Please subscribe to the podcast and check out the interviews with these amazing artists.

Upcoming interviews with: Janet Harbison, Ailie Robertson, Deke Dickerson, and Eddie Baraneck.

I’m happy to announce that my flagship podcast is being rebranded as, “HarpSong”. Join me over on Facebook in our discussion group. Meet the artists and chat with fellow harp fans.

By Strangeford Water Album by Janet Harbison

Janet has a new gorgeous album out called, “By Strangford Water” along with a book of sheet music from the album.  This is Janet’s  first fully original solo album of compositions since her debut album in 1985.

Janet’s website is filled with resources, books, and music. (My interview with Janet will be posted later this year.)

Woman with a harp

Kim was one of the first musicians I interviewed on HarpSong. She has so many gorgeous albums and books of music.

Rachel is a wonderful performer, teacher, and composer. This joyous album will get your toes tapping and your spirits up. Check out Rachel's other albums as well as her arrangements of Manx music.

The title of this album comes from a poem of the same name by, Edna St. Vincent Millay.

"The Harpweaver hones in on the idea of artistic nostalgia. When we can’t be with those that we love; surely the next best thing is to experience the catharsis of familiar sounds? Notes and words that bring a sense of connection, possibility and joy.”

I have two separate interviews with Grainne and one with Billy that you should check out. Not only are they amazing musicians, but they are scholars of the tradition.

Get yourself a copy of Robbin’s album, “Just As I Am” on iTunes. This is a gorgeous album with songs of praise that will be sure to inspire you and is perfect for the holidays.

Recorded during the COVID Pandemic, a collection of soothing harp melodies, compositions by Nicolas Carter. Also, check out his children's book, “Hanish - The Story of the Harp”.

Martha Gallagher Just A Moment

In Martha's newest project she has put together one minute meditations. When you sign up you get a harp meditation every day to help you just take a breath and take a moment for yourself.

Erik Ask-Upmark Winter is Coming

Taken from Swedish harpist/composer/multi-instrumentalist, Erik Ask-Upmark's liner notes, “I can almost promise that all the tunes on this CD will be familiar to Swedish traditional musicians, so please have a go at it! And if you don’t play an instrument (yet), it is never to late to start – Swedish folk music is at its best when you are able to partake of the tradition yourself, either as a player or dancer, although listeners are very welcome too of course! If you do want to learn to play the tunes yourself, there is also a “Winter is Coming” sheet music book available.”

Tristan Le Govic - Dañs

Bretton harpist Tristan Le Govic's album is a joyful celebration of historical and modern dances from here and there.

My good friends over at Kicks Books and Norton Records have a fabulous new release Mind Over Matter.
The Myths and Mysteries of Detroit's Fortune Records

It tells the story of Robbin Gordon-Cartier as a little girl when she started taking harp lessons.

Shveta Thakrar “Star Daughter”

I have an upcoming interview with Shveta Thakrar, HarperTeen author of the new YA book, “Star Daughter”.  Sheetal is half star/half human and

“has no choice but to answer the starsong and ascend to the sky. But her celestial family has summoned her for a reason: to act as their human champion in a competition to decide the next ruling house of the heavens.”

Sheetal loves to play the harp. There are also other magical beings in the book who play the harp.

Illustrated book for children.

Inspired by a dream, a young boy named Hanish transforms a hunting bow into the first harp and shares his music with the world.

You can't go wrong with any of Deke's music. Whether it's Rockabilly, Country, Punk, Garage Rock, or anything in-between you'll love Deke's guitar mastery and his love for what he does. Keep an eye out for my interview with Deke coming out later this year! And his book on Merle Travis that is due to come out in the Spring of 2021!

So, grab that cup of coffee or tea, sit back, relax and get inspired.

I can't wait for you to join me. Don forget to subscribe to the podcast.
